DVI conection to VGA conection

Hello,
I have only a DVI connection on my computer. But my flat screen needs a VGA connection.
SO, I used a simple connector that changes the DVI pins to the VGA pins, so that i can connect my desk top to my flat screen.
However, my flat screen is saying that it does not have a single to it.

just to test it, I plugged it into my laptop that has a direct VGA connection, & it works great. but I need it hooked up to my desktop.
Do I need software, or do I need tell my computer somehow that it has a converter on it?

you have to tell your computer that it is sending the signal to a tv. it's in the adaptor settings somewhere.
