MAC Address and IP Address

Hello,
why it is impossible for the nodes to communicate using MAC address without being assigned IP adress?

MAC address and IP address are needed for running computer network correctly as specified in Internet Protocol Suite, MAC address is used in Link layer whereas IP is used in Internet layer.
