Ethernet needs replaced

Hello,
I have a Compac computer with Windows 2000 and the ethernet port is bad. It has been checked, so I am sure it is bad. Does it have to have a certain one or can any ethernet replace it? I have an HP that I have taken parts off of to fix another computer and wondered if I coulld use it to fix the Compac.
Thanks for any information you can give me.

Almost Any Ethernet card can be moved for one desktop computer to another. It does no harm to try.
