No audio devices in device manager

Hello,
Fixing this laptop for a friend it is a compaq presario v3646au and i'm running vista. the sound worked the other day randomly but the next day it had stopped again I've tried pretty much every thing that people have suggested and still no joy. when i go to device manager there is no sound /game controler on the list can anyone help me please i'm getting really frustraited

hi there,

if its missing in device manager you need to install them

use driver cd or download from official website

I tried that and downloaded the the audio driver but when i went to install it is said it couldn't install because it couldn't find the device
