Did you activate the external monitor port? To save power most laptops do not have the VGA port active at all times. Dell Uses Fn+F8 (Function plus F8 key at the same time) to toggle on and off the VGA port. You might find an "Intel GMA Driver" icon in the Control Panel you can change display settings for both monitors there.
