My speakers don't work

Hello,
my altec lansing speakers work when they are plugged in but when they are not, they don't turn on!
can anyone help or do i have to take them back?

Hello it is the inMotion iM600 for ipod when i plug it in it turns on when it is inpluged it doesn't
