No sound xp sp 2

Hello, This is a fairly common
problem but i am getting frustrated trying to get the right answers to solve. Windows media player says that- Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
Sound and Audio Properties audio tab the default device says there is no playback device, no recording device etc. I have gone into device manager and uninstalled all the sound devices I could. Can't seem to rebbot in safe mode although that may be irrelevant to my sound problem, What now?
