You have multiple options to share Internet connection, have a look on following tutorials to decide the best option:
Get a wireless router and set up a wireless network
Get a wired Ethernet router and set up a wired network

Actually it is. I did this before the days of high speed access.
1: Install a modem (external or internal) and NIC in the main computer
2: Connect all computers to a switch and set up windows networking
3: Configure Windows ICS (internet connection sharing)
4: Configure your main computer to dial out everytime it detects an internet connection (using IE, this is under tools-->internet options-->connection)
