New version of itunes

Hey,

I recently got a new ipod and in order to use it it says I should download a newer version of itunes. I already have an older ipod and an older version of itunes. If I download the new version Im afraid it will delete all my songs because while I tried installing it it said 'removing files' so I cancelled it. Is this what it really means or should I continue on with the installation?
