How to connect the usb keyboard to my laptop

Hello,
when i connect a usb keyboard to my sony vaio laptop.... my laptop does not recognize the device...
any suggestioins..... is it necessary to download any driver and install..??????????

Dear Sir,

This problem might be caused by the port that you are using. Try plugging it to another port to see. If the problem still persists, get to the device manager and you will see its driver with an exclamation mark, right click on it and get the driver updated.
