Hooking up an external monitor to a laptop

Hello,
I would like to be able to hook up my Compaq presario laptop to an external monitor (I have an Acer, model # AL1912) Do I need an adaptor and which one? Thanks

Hi there,

Just take the vga cable from monitor and plug to laptop female vga 15 pin port and press Fn+ (F1 to F12 key with a monitor display on it) to get the display on external monitor.

thanks in my case it was pressing the Fn key together with F7 (which had a picture of a monitor on it) .....silly me should have had my eyes tuned but then I'm a Mac user and this problem does not occur on my Mac!
