XP will not read my portable HDD

HI,
I have a notepad with MS XP home loaded. I used to read my portable HDD but now it does not. If I log in under SAFE MODE, it reads it fine. I suspect that it is a regedit fault but not sure how to fix the problem. Uninstalled USB drivers, gone in under Management but no luck. Any suggestions.
