I've got a 500GB western digital external drive that I got some years ago, and then the usb port became damaged, so I removed the casing and mounted it in my computer. It isn't an IDE drive, and it doesnt show as being there under disk management, or in the bios. I've basically run out of ideas.

It's either an IDE (PATA) or a SATA drive. (unless it's more than 10 years old). If it takes a wide ribbon cable then it's an IDE drive. You might need to change the jumpers to make it a SLAVE drive. It probably has no jumpers or is set to Master. The jumper settings should be printed on the drive.

Good Luck
