Compaq nx5000 dark screen

Seems to start fine and I can barely make out the HP logo and it moves to the next stage but I cannot read anything after the startup logo. In carrying it the other day I bounced it a bit but not very hard. It seems that whatever 'lights' up the screen is 'burned out '. Any suggestions?

It does sound like the "backlight" has failed. A qualified repair shop can replace it for a cost of $115 to $175. This is not really a DIY project as it takes some skill and experience to do it correctly.
