Dell inspiron 6000 windows xp laptop

The laptopstarts up with white screen. After about 5 mins the white screen develops
thousands of multi colored vertical lines after another 5 or 10 mins then the windows xp loads up then you can log in. the lines go away but it appears that the screen flickers but if your not looking at it hard you wont notice. Each time during start up goes through same process but each time it takes longer and longer... He stated that he got checked foxnews.com and then turned off computer. turned it on a day later and then this issue. as of now when you start up the laptop its just a white screen it doesnt do anything now. this isnt a new computer it appears to be older
