My Laptop does not detect a wi-fi card

Until recently, my compaq laptop wi-fi was working, now my connection software does not detect a card at all. I've tried to open my HP wireless assistant, but it won't open and I've even tried to reinstall it but it's not working. Help, what do I do now?
