Connection problems on Mac

On a Mac when I'm At locations like restaurants , bars, or friends homes and try to sign onto there network even when I have the right password I can't get online. Connection times out

Maybe your settings for the internet connections? Although I am using a PC and not quite sure how it works on Mac.
