Sound recording

I have windows 7 and an HP pavillion dv6000-my microphone is enabled..boost is up but when I try to do a sound recording, I hear no voice in the pay back file...yet when I tap on the mic...that itself is recorded (the tapping) but no sound..what do I do..I have the latest realtek software if that matters. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
