Combining 2 cells to 1

Hi,

I have data like below in two column of excel sheet:

1-Jan | 2004
23-Jul| 2004
12-Feb|2003
................
.........

Out out required is 1-jan-04,
23-jul-04,
12-Feb-03
.........................so on.
Concatenation say =A1&B1 or =A1&&B1 didn't work......it gave the value 401802004...

Kindly help me to join these cells.
