2nd hard drive connectivity problem

Hello,
i have a problem one hard drive 40 GB is connected to my PC when i connected a second one then it give rise many problem it didnt take the DVD rom & also the first one hard Drive.after many attempt it only took the first hard drive.i am still without the DVD rom.my computer is desktop P 4 with 2 GHz processor of intel celeron with 768 mb ram.

If its PATA, then try to connect 1 in master and the other slave.
Just checkout that both the devices are not in master
