Can't download anti-malwareSolved/Closed

Question

Hi,

Sorry, I'm not very computer savy.

I've had a problem for a while with Google redirecting my search results to different 'random' search engines.

After looking for a solution I found that the Anti-malware software might help.

I tried downloading it but when I clicked the 'Download' button at the following link (https://ccm.net/downloads/security-and-maintenance/4621-malwarebytes-anti-malware/ I get another window opening that states 'HTTP 404 Not Found'.  The original page states I'm downloading the software but nothing else happens and a couple of seconds later it states I have downloaded the programme.

Nothing else seems to happen at this point and I don't know if he programme has been downloaded or not.

Can anyone please help?

Hello,

I am here assuming that your OS is Windows and that you are using IE.

1. Please in your IE go to tools
2. Click on Internet options
3, Click on the connection tab
4. Click on the Lan button
5. Ensure that using a proxy is unchecked.

Thanks for the rapid reply.

Yes, I do use Windows (Vista) and Internet Explorer.

I did what you said and the proxy box is unchecked.

NB - I don't know if it's important but I connect to the internet via Wi-Fi

Hi,

My prompt reply is pure coincidence as I happened to be there and I was just about of logoff.

I suspect that your system is affected by a Trojan Horse of the redirecting type.

Wifi, my grand-mother keep saying to stay away from it especially while driving so I am not familiar with it.

1. Please reboot in safe mode with networking.

2. To fix the problem, I must have a Hyjacthis log.

Please download, install and request a scan and save a log.  Copy the log and post it here.

Hi,

I've run the HiJackThis programme and copied the log information below.

I had a trouble entering Safe Mode.  I tried pressing F5 while my laptop was rebooting but nothing happened so I ran the file in my normal account.

Thank you for the log and it looks virus clean

However I suggest you run another HJT scan, without log and delete the following item.  Just check it and click on fix checked.  It is useless and may cause interference.

The 404 error you received is common when the site is temporarely under maintenance.

If you wish to download Malwarebyte, you must save it to your desktop, but although that it is a powerful tool, it must be uninstall after use for it may conflict with your McAfee.  Have you tried to make a search to find it where the download may have ended?

As for the redirecting to other search engines, I would need more details as to the engines.

Anyhow, I can assure you that, according to your log everything looks honkydory.

Hi,

Sorry for not responding to your last message as I work away during the week.

I tried to 'fix checked' the above noted file however, it reappears on the next scan.

After a bit of messing about I managed to download and run the Malwarebytes software.  After running the programme it was stated I had 5No infected files.  I quarantined the files.  Should I now delete them before I uninstall Malwarebytes or simply leave them quarantined when I remove the programme?

Hello Nyuk,

Yes you may delete the files in question.

Good antivirus and good firewall make internet safer.  If you wish to ensure your passwords are safe, ensure the sites you go to are secured for transsactions and show a padlock in the top toolbar otherwise, it is on your own risk.
