Dell inspiron 9300 boots to black screen

Hello, My Dell Inspiron 9300 boots to black screen with cursor in the top left corner. I have scanned many forums and cannot find a usable solution.
I tried holding down F12 and a screen came up with options...I selected "diagonstic", which it then runs, but I get the following error message "no diagnostic utility partition found". I then repeated F12, selecting "cardbus" and got the following message "cardbus nic boot fail".
I then tried tapping F8 during the boot-up and still got the black screen with the cursor.
Are there any other solutions short of calling Dell and spending upwards of $250 to get this fixed?
