Dear Amy,
Photoshop always works best with the known formats: psd and jpeg
If you open a camera loaded file in another format such as nef always "save it or save it as one of the Photoshop known formats otherwise you will be, sort of speek, marooned up the stream without an oar.
The ex .nef files are now corrupted and can not longer be of any use to you.
