Computer screen goes black before startup

Hello,
I haven't used my old NetBook for a couple of months and recently when I tried to start it up, the only response I got from the LCD Monitor was a white, blinking underscore. I have tried shutting it down then restarting, all the responses have been the same.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions on what I should try, Thank you!

You might try the hard reboot procedure:
1. remove the battery and disconnect the wall cord
2. push and hold down the power switch for 30 seconds
3. restore battery and pulg the netbook in.
4. try a normal start
This procedure sometimes fixes a boot problem.
