My itunes isnt working

i got a new itouch for christmas and every time i plug it in to the computer itunes says"itunes cannot connect to the itunes store. please make sure your connection os active and try again." i have internet, the proxy setting box is not cheched, and ive tried setting and unsetting the parental controls for itune and ive downloaded the newest version of itune. so frustrated. PLEASE HELP!!!
