What can cause your laptop screen to go blank

Hello, I turned my laptop on one morning and the screen never came up. I could hear the fans running, but the drive lights were not on. I charged it and the charging light came on, but the screen remained black. I have an Acer Aspire. Can you please tell me what's wrong. I'm going crazy here.

Unplug the power, remove the battery and then hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. Then reattach the power and attempt a boot. It worked for me! Just shutdown, put the battery back in you're good.
