Computer not working (Dell)

Hello,
My name is Tracy a friend gave me a Dell lad top recently so I bought att service but when turned computer on to set it up computer screen says f1 to reboot system or f2 to reboot dual devices so I pressed f1 and it didn't do anything for hours couldn't get past the screen so I turned it off took out the battery and the windowsscreen came on saying I needed to repair system so I pressed repair and everything she had on the computer came back on then I tried to install broadband and it docent let me I can't even piggy back someone and I know my neighbor has service cause my son does from his computer how can I fixthis

This is one of two things:
1. a damaged Windows operating system
2. a faulty hard drive.
I suggest you take it to a local repair shop.
