I just had my hard drive replaced so it is blank, and now they mentioned a recovery disc that I don't have. Would I be able to follow the same instructions given for the "hidden" disc for the recovery or does that not work with a new hard drive?

It depends. A replacement drive bought from Dell will have the recovery partition. A generic drive bought from a local dealer will not.
Good luck
