This sounds like a hardware failure of the screen. You can probably remove the hard drive, buy a USB adapter and convert it to an external drive. The laptop will need a hands-on diagnostic by a qualified computer shop to determine the exact problem. It's quite probable that a repair will cost more than a new computer.
