Updating an Iphone 4

Hello,
If i update an iphone 4 version 4.3.5 to 5.0.1
will everything get deleted especially my contacts.does anyone know how to prevent it from deleting my contacts on my iphone 4 when i update it because i hve aot of contacts and its important so this is y i need help.I just want to update my iphone 4 without anything deleting.

You sync the iPhone to your computer, do the update and then re-sync to restore the data. Otherwise, you loose your data.
