Router Communication Problem

Hello,
My daughter recently moved to a shared apartment where a Linksys WRT54G router is being used. She has a USB adaptor plugged into her computer that worked just fine with the router in her old apartment (adaptor type unknown). She cannot get through to the internet. I had her type 192.168.1.1 at the command prompt and it returned only "timed out" responses. Does this indicated something wrong in a setup, is it a communications problem (she's only 30ft or less from the router) or can the adaptor be bad?
