If you want to add a second hard disk when using one IDE cable then one drive must be set to "master" and one must be set to "slave". You need to change the jumpers on the new drive. Normally there will be instructions printed on the drive.
SATA drives used on most computer manufactured in the last 5 years do not have this restrictions. Since, each drive has its own cable.
