Hi caza66,
As you have mentioned, the computer started giving you several error messages when you booted to the Windows Desktop. There might be corrupt software or drivers that might give these errors. Also a possible cause can be a virus in the computer. To isolate the possible causes to one, do follow the steps below:
Try booting the computer to safe mode and check if you still get those error messages. You can find steps on how to boot to safe mode from the below mentioned link:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows?ui=en-US&rs=en-001&ad=US
If you have Windows XP you can check the below mentioned link to boot to the Safe Mode:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true
If everything works fine in Safe Mode try to disable startup items. Check the links below to see how to disable startup items:
Windows XP - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows
Windows 7 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows
If the above step doesn't fix the issue, try to restore your computer to an earlier date, you might find the below mentioned links helpful:
Windows XP - https://support.microsoft.com/instantanswers/62ed802d-7c8d-35d9-9b82-6cace4b08185
Windows 7 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows?ui=en-US&rs=en-001&ad=US
Also, run a Virus scan on the machine if any of the above doesn't fix the problem.
Do reply with results.
