Hi 7thdan,
There are a few Clock Apps available for free from Microsoft Store; these apps display clocks on the screen. Probably one of those got installed on your computer. Please remove the undesired app from the computer and the clock should disappear. To get steps on how to remove an app in Windows 8, you can check this video:

Thanks but I used Acronis True Image and returned to slightly before that because nothing else worked. Actually, there was no evidence it was installed in programs and features.

A little clarification will help here. You have posted you used "Acronis True Image" and switched to an earlier date (or restore point). Is the issue fixed or you still see the clock on the screen?

OK - I gave up and used Acronis backup to restore to a previous date and now the clock is gone. Thanks a lot for your interest - lI would've liked to know how to get rid of the clock

I am glad to know, finally the issue got fixed. As mentioned earlier this might have been an app that was causing the problem. Please check the below mentioned link, it shows one similar app:

In future if you happen to install any such app try to look for the same on the startup screen among the tiles and have it uninstalled from there.
