My best guess is that you have a hardware problem.
It could be any of the following:
1. Motherboard failure
2. CPU failure
3. power supply failure
4. memory failure
Yes you might have shorted out the USB port and damaged the motherboard but I don't think it had anything to do with the failure.
Depending on the laptop's age it might not be cost effective to have it repaired. Since laptop repair can be very expensive.
