My monitor

My monitor will not turn on. It says no display and then all these stripes go every where. The computer comes on. I have a gateway and it runs Windows XP. Anybody have any idea what it could be? I was thinking graphics card or the VGA/D-SUB Connector?

Your right it could be either. Is there another desktop or laptop you can use to test the monitor and/or cable? You might also remove the video card (after you have blown out the dust) clean the contacts with a new pencil eraser and then reinsert it.
