i got a msg to the effect my pc met a problem and would restart, followed by the toshiba splash screen then something about starting automatic repair then a blue screen, then nothing. I tried to recover using both 0 and F12. gets to first screen with yes or no, if i want to proceed with recovery. I click yes and then the splash screen again, then back to blue screen nothingness. Is my HDD toast?

it goes by so fast, there's :) and below that Your pc has run into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error information and then we'll restart it for you. there's another line, but goes too fast.

I never had a Toshiba but according to the numbers of issues reported on Kioskea, I would certainly never buy one.
You have tried to reset to factory setting by holding down the 0 key which is really the ultimate in recovery for Toshiba.
A blue screen usually indicates a hardware issue, if you have not added anything, your guess seems correct.
Sorry
