make sure if the harddisk is master n not slave
check the jumper at the back of the harddisk
check out if the cd rom is connecte in series with the hard drive
is so then make sure the cd rom is slave
check the jumper at the back of the cd rom
go to bios setting and check the same

Try to reinstall the windows XP, it might be just a bug when installing.
