A word file is not the same as an exe file and that makes a difference!

There are probably both types of files on this drive, but my main interest are the word files I think. This PC belongs to an elderly person and she has a lot of genealogy data on it that I would like to retrieve if at all possible.
Thank you in advance for your help.

There two possibilities, try:
testing opening one small Word file with the MS Word presently on the computer with Microsoft Office Word, and save the "file as"
If the above does not give the expected results, open the file with Note Pad and save it. Formatting may be lost but the info will be saved.
