I was using my laptopt when an error about it's visual driver won't display correctly appear and then a colourful line appear on the screen and laptop shut down by itself. When I tried to start it back, it only shows black screen, though there's some noises (probably from motherboard). It will power off itself after a few minutes though.
How should I fix this? Is it the motherboard problem? If it indeed is, is there a way to retrieve my files? Please help.

Can you try an external monitor?
You probably have a failure in the video chip or Motherboard. Neither of which can be fixed at home or in most computer repair shops.
I suggest you remove the hard drive and convert it to an external drive by placing it in a USB hard drive enclosure adapter. Just be sure to buy the correct adapter fro you type drive. Older laptops have IDE connectors while newer laptops have SATA drives.
Good Luck
