Laptop screen turns black randomly

So I have a two year old Sony Viao and since a couple of days the laptop screen goes black for a few seconds during which the computer is completely unresponsive and then comes back again. This is usually happens when I open a new tab or am on the net.

I cant tell if its a hardware or a software problem.

I am perplexed. Help!
