I would not say that your laptop is hopeless. You may be facing some HDD issue. You may need to get a new drive, a Windows installation DVD and a SATA to USB cable.
Check in BIOS if your current drive is recognized. Remove it from laptop and try to connect it to a PC. Check if it is accessible. If so, perform a diagnostic with the HDD manufacturer's software. Check results. If the drive is not accessible or results are bad, get a new drive. Put it it your laptop, boot from Windows DVD and install OS. If the drive is accessible, but scan shows problems. Get a new drive, install OS on it, connect the old one with SATA to USB cable and transfer data to new HDD.
Have in mind that, if your laptop has some warranty left, it is better to contact reseller, because any opening may void warranty.
