Hi there.
is your laptop an old laptop?
what is the security encryption on your wireless network?
it may be too high to support your hardware.
try changing it to WPA Mixed

Have you recently changed router settings?
go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections
open up wireless connection and delete the profile for your wireless if it exists.

Some other users will have the possibility to make use of a wireless internet connection with as you setup your router.
If you use a wireless connection, the main laptop or computer doesn't have to be on for downloading and sharing. Also, should you use it via Wi-Fi, it is easy to shut down your primary Personal computer.
While configuring the router, you should not undermine on security and safety complications. You shouldn't connect to an unsafe network as well so you will have the ability to secure your data without any complications.
