Replace explorer.exe as the default application program

Hello,
My question is how can we replace explorer.exe as the default application program after booting in Windows 7. Actually working on a student validation software for my college lab, so need that software file to open first for the identification of the student before he gets to the desktop.

a quick search found this possible solution:

Try changing the shell value in the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon


Change it to start your application instead of starting explorer.exe.
