Hi pepperlady,
According to Microsoft, booting from external drive is not supported. It is true that you may find some tutorials online which show step by step guide on how to do it, but I believe you may be having some performance issues even if you manage to boot. The main reason is that the USB port is not as stable as the SATA. You may experience boot path issues and data loss.
