So what letter is the USB drive. Try opening cmd prompt, and entering in "CD {the drive letter}". as in CHANGE DIRECTORY> A command prompt isnt going to list all drives.
And if you want your PC to boot from it, the bios has to be changed for boot devices, and order of devices. :)

your problem is simple, your using windows xp, and xp not list the usb drives as disk, try the yumy utility to solve your problem
