How to get back my lost files

Hello, i have window 7(professional) computer. one day i tried to format my computer because of many problems it was facing but at the end i noticed i installed another new window 7(ultimate) instead of formatting(meaning that both OS are installed). I kept using my laptop no matter using the new installed one. By mistake, that current OS stopped working and when i tried to use the old one, it worked. The problem then is my files: I tried to open Local disk D where my most important folder containing photos was(on window 7 ultimate, remember i'm using the old one bcs the new stopped working) i get the folder but when i open it i see nothing else except the shortcut of the same folder name. So , what can i do? Plz help
