It's possible that the jack is damaged and the computer thinks there is always a headphone plugged-in. IPhone head phones have been known to damage laptop jacks. They seem to be a little too long and damage the spring loaded prong inside the jack.
Some people report that if you the headphone plug and then quickly pull it out a few times it might release the bent prong.
