Helo Dave,
Can you please, give me more detailed info regarding the error that your laptop has. When did the desktop freezing occur? Was there any power outage while the laptop was still on or did you hit it by mistake somehow? Has been spilled something over? What type of OS does your laptop have?
If you work with Windows, please try to reboot your laptop in Safe Mode and open the Command prompt as an administrator. Once you are there, you have to enter the following command:
chkdsk /r
Then press Enter and wait for the system to repair the errors of your hard drive if there are any.
