My notebook will not shut down.

Hello,
when shutting down my notebook it goes through the whole process and says windows is shutting down but, when it should power off it just goes to a blue screen and never turns off. The mouse pointer appears on the screen in the middle but you cant move it. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

When ever I try to shutdown my laptop it shows the message windows is shutting down and my laptop gets hanged, I am using windows xp with sp 3 please help me to resolve the problem
